Re-thinking the Education System in India
Nearly a quarter of India’s population is in school or college, and quality learning is always an issue with such a large population. There are over 1.5 million schools in our country today, with approximately 250 million students enrolled, making the Indian education system the largest single system of its kind in the world. However, significant gaps in the Indian education system should concern educators, policymakers, and parents.
Here’s what Anoop Singh Bishnoi, The Chairman of The Doon School, Dehradun, entrepreneur, and educationist, has to say about our education system at present. He says, “The pandemic has paved the way for blended learning and hybrid classrooms in the educational system that would have otherwise taken many years. While the last two years have taken on unprecedented significance in the journey of a reimagining education, today is even more critical for all of us.
We must find a strategic balance between
the old and the new. Technology integration is critical, but determining the
‘how,’ ‘why,’ and ‘to what end’ is more important. Aside from using technology
as a learning tool, teaching new-age technological concepts, which may be
required for many jobs in the future, should begin in elementary school. Our
curriculum must be goal-oriented and inquiry-based. Along with discipline-based
literacy, a collaborative approach in which students can learn and engage with
others while applying their knowledge to the real world through practical projects
is essential. Above all, students must be able to learn at their own pace
without being constrained by a non-adaptive curriculum. Technology has
simplified the implementation of a differentiated learning model that is
tailored to individual needs.”
Education has the power to improve society
by bringing about long-term development and making people aware of their rights
and responsibilities. The primary goal of education is the holistic development
of the individual. Concepts and approaches that have been repeatedly discussed
as the focal point in an entirely new learning space and an ever-evolving
ecosystem must be implemented now and with utmost clarity.
