Life skills for success in school and beyond

Have you ever considered how capable your child is of taking care of themselves? Are your children mature enough to make simple decisions? Have you considered whether your child has been taught necessary life skills to face the world?

It has been observed that there is a gap today between the theoretical and practical worlds, which is due to a lack of skills developed in children. In today’s globalised world, life skill development is a tool for empowering children and safeguarding their future by providing them with overall development.

“Instilling life skills and well-being skills in schools benefits children and youth’s mental health now and in the future. Life skills training can be delivered as a module or as individual exercises. Teachers and other school personnel should become acquainted with and even receive training in, the teaching of life skills. When life skills are consistently taught, the results are visible at the school level, not just in individual student wellbeing.” says Anoop Singh Bishnoi, Chairman of The Doon School, Dehradun.

Being a successful doctor, engineer, architect, teacher, manager, or entrepreneur necessitates more than memorizing textbooks. And the acquisition of life skills — abilities that prepare children to deal with life’s diverse challenges — is a critical missing link in the educational process. These necessary skills help children deal with failure, relationships, sexuality, exam fears, rejection, peer pressure, and stress — all of which can have a negative impact on their lives. While there is no definitive list, some basic life skills that all adolescents must learn about include time and money management, effective communication, interpersonal relationships, and stress management. Education is not life preparation; it is life itself. Literacy, numeric skills, and life skills are essential for young people. These skills and abilities, instilled in them as children, are what make them successful adults. These abilities assist people in creating meaningful lives for themselves and becoming productive members of society.

The future is unpredictable and if education is to prepare children for their future as well as the future of the society in which they live, it must have a reasonably clear idea of the skills and abilities that children need to be helped to develop. “The nature of school would be drastically altered in the years to come as several discontinuous and radical changes would occur in technology. Knowledge and cognitive abilities developed today may become obsolete tomorrow, but if we provide our children with the skills and support they require to thrive in all aspects of life today, they’ll learn to survive and thrive in unprecedented times. Consider the world we could create if all of our children graduated from school with a solid foundation of life skills. They would be able to function better and live more meaningful, emotionally healthy lives. It would be a true legacy of peace for future generations.” adds Anoop.
